Whats the word?

As a first gen filipiino Canadian living in a foreign country you miss the catch phrases when you are at home. For me its when you hear Aunt’s and uncles from the philippines talking in english. You have to hear it to know what i’m talking about….. In London, there is a small filipino community about +150 000 living here in the UK, about half living in London.

However, one of the adjustments you have to do when you do talk here in the UK are the variations of the english language. Things typically called in North America are called different things here:

North American: Running shoes, runners
UK: Trainers

NA: Elevator
UK: Lift

NA: Line up
UK: Queues

NA: ATM machine, bank machine
UK: Cash Point

NA: Game
UK: Match

NA: Co workers
UK: Colleagues

NA: Stereo
UK: Hi fi

NA: Corrections
UK: Ammends

uhmmm. i’m sure there is more…

also, i’ve cannot understand cockanese (cockney) yet…..

more to come.
