whereabouts

hey kids, I’m back in the great white north. Where the sun shines with the wind chill of minus 30 degrees. The land of opportunity and friendly neighbours. The little sister to the US and where we occasionally need the Canadian army to help us out of snowstorms. I am back in Toronto. For the past year I’ve been around the world, many places people dream of going alot of the time people do not have the time to or the money to. I have learned you make the world as big as you want it to be. Explore it. Enjoy it. Live it. …. so let’s do it again. does anybody want to join me this time around?

impressed

my two week stint at BBDO Guerrero Ortega has opened up my eyes. It has inspired me. After witnessing a ‘what to achieve in 2008′ meeting, I was quite impressed at what they hope to achieve. They say they want to be in the top 25 agencies in the world!!!!!…that’s kinda crazy. Secondly, i’m not only impressed at what they have achieve but how they are going to achieve it. I like the fact they let the creative have free reign to do what they want. I like the way they train other creatives into bigger things. I have not witnessed that in other agencies. As a freelancer here they have welcomed me with open arms, they have accepted me as an employee, not as a temp such as other agencies I have worked at. By being here I came here what i wanted to achieve. I’ve found senior filipino creatives from which I can learn from.

You don’t want to hear any work stories

This past weekend my Tita Mila wanted to show me Baguio. Baguio is the ‘coldest’ part of the Philippines. The year round temperature is 23-25 degrees. Which is perfect weather for overweight people such as myself. Its about 7000 ft. above sea level that is why it is colder in other areas in the Philippines.

Just like any tourist I wanted something to bring back home to show everybody where I’ve been. As part of my wardrobe I wanted a native (Igorut, pronounced - eeee g’rrrrr-ote) costume that I can use as a scarf. For the past couple of weeks, I’ve seen native paterns and materials that are easily wearable for the cold. So I wanted one to use as a scarf.

So Rjay, Riza and I went shopping for my ’scarf’ in  Baguio asking each and every merchant what we were looking for. To no avail, almost every merchant said no “they did not have anything resembling like a scarf with a native pattern”. but there was one store where I saw something that can be used as a scarf. I asked how much, she said “300″, i bargained “200″, she  went down to PHP250 which is about $6 CAN, so i bought it…….. the ’scarf’ is actually used as underwear as they called it a g-string…. so when you see me walking with this scarf, i’ll be wearing underwear around my neck!

HSBC story

The other day I went to inquire about opening an account at an HSBC here in the Philippines. The reason in doing this was to prepare if the work prospect was going to offer me a position and I wanted to make sure I can open an account.

If you are not aware but the security guards at banks carry shotguns. Being not intimidated I went to a bank. The front doors of the bank were not open so the security guard ask me to go around the back. I went to the back entrance. I went upstairs to the HSBC. And it didnt look like a ‘typical’ HSBC branch it looked a bit to fancy for ‘regular’ folk such as myself.

I go to the front reception and speak in my perfect english and inquire about opening an account. I think they were baffeled at my North American accent and my flipflops. As the account manager was trying to sell me on their services and different accounts i couldnt help doze off….when she easily slips in …”In order to keep this account running you need PHP 4000000 (CAN $100000) to keep the account open!!!!!” LOL!……
